The owners wanted a garden design that complemented their planned modern renovation while providing a practical, low-maintenance outdoor space for their young family.

The garden needed to support family time, entertaining, bike riding and ball games.

Maintaining a clear view from the back deck and house to the existing swimming pool was also a key priority.

The existing yard contained scattered fruit trees and pathways that needed to be removed.

The clothesline and pool entrance were both positioned a considerable distance from the house, making the layout less convenient for everyday family use.

The new design divided the backyard into three distinct zones: one paved area and two lawn areas.

The paved area provides space for bike riding, a fire pit and direct access to the pool, while preserving a clear view from the house across the backyard.

The larger lawn beside the pool was designed as an open play area.

It is separated from the paved section by a garden bed planted with deciduous trees, introducing structure and seasonal interest without blocking the view.

A smaller lawn closer to the house and laundry door accommodates the relocated clothesline, selected fruit trees and a practical herb garden.

A major design improvement involved repositioning the pool gate and replacing the existing pool fence with frameless glass.

This made the backyard feel larger, improved access to the pool and maintained the requested line of sight from the house and back deck.

Low plantings of lavender, rosemary and gardenias were used to complement the new layout and provide fragrance, texture and low-maintenance greenery.
